Week 5 (Information Architecture)
Saul Wurman came up with this idea of information architecture, but what became confusing was features of design such as industrial design, information design and interior design were all about looking things look good but in many cases not practical. Wurmans aim is to abstract complex information in simple forms, hence is obsession with maps.
Information Architecture can be described as the combination of organising labelling and navigational schemes within an information system OR the structural design of an information space to facilitate task completion and intuitive access to content.
BUT:
Christian Wodthe Definition is what best suits us in web page design;
“ You know when you’re on a website and you see a bunch of navigation choices to click on? I’m the one who decided what the choices are, what they are called and where they take you when you click.”
Wurman’s LATCH analogy is a good way of organising content, which can be applied in
relation the web design.
